Welcome 2013: Year of Expansion

Today is February 3, 2013. It’s my first real day off since the holidays - due mostly to the fact that I technically run 3 businesses and a business owner’s work is never done (especially when that work is being done from home.) You’d be surprised how amazingly difficult it is to carve out “me” time when you love your work as much as I do. It’s takes just as much discipline as doing my work oriented tasks - crazy, right?

There are a lot of favorite things I like to do in my life. The short list:

Helping people find their joy
Thrift store shopping
Taking in art (movies, theater, TV, museums)

Writing is something that I do the least, and it’s one of the things I enjoy the most. I love to collect my thoughts into words and share them with others, and yet I rarely carve out time to do that. I also like reflecting on my life, so the new year is always an inspired time for me.

“Year Of” Theme: Expansion

My friend, Michael Ian Cedar, wrote a blog post about creating an inspirational year. So I thought about it, and I discovered that what I really want more of this year is EXPANSION.

I did a search for artwork on “expansion” for this blog, and came upon the tarot card for The Sun. in one description:
“The energy of The Sun combines splendor with foundation to provide happiness and exuberance. The Sun gives us the love of life to help us to build upon the foundation of our reality.  It also provides us with an awareness and insight into the agendas of those around us to help us make important decisions with regard to how we would like to live our lives.”
When I take the time to think about it, I have a lot of amazing things going for me - a wonderful boyfriend, great apartment, a day job I created for myself which allows me to be an actor full time, an amazing theater company that allows me to play the way I want to play on a daily basis, a loving family, super-awesome friends… the list goes on and on.

But even with all of that, I sometimes can feel stagnant, like I’m just maintaining what I have and not really growing or changing. That’s where I came up with the idea of expansion. I want to take what I have and just reach out a little further. It reminds me of stretches I do in yoga or dance class - taking the position I normally take, and then just pushing it a little bit further than I think I can go. That’s what expansion means to me.

More specifically:
  • I’d like to make sure I’m carving out more time to be a friend to the people I love.
  • I’d like to read more: plays, books, articles, papers - so I can soak up learning.
  • I’d like to be more mindful about my body, mind and spirit.
  • I want to make a more comfortable living, both from my acting income but also my coaching income.
  • I’d like my theater company to make more of an impact in the community, going past the boundaries of producing theater to really reach audiences on a regular basis.

I stumbled upon another blog where there was a contest to share personal answers for common questions. These can be answered on a yearly basis and then compared from year to year. Here are my answers as I look back at 2012 and forward to 2013.
