Spreading The Love

I just want to give a “shout out” to my friend Joan, who gave me a bit of a boost last week, and its a gift that keeps on giving. Last Sunday, Joan sent me this email about a project that is auditioning soon (the show’s information has been removed - I don’t like to mention auditions specifically!)

“I'm going to suggest you go to the audition for [show redacted].  It's an EPA at Equity-  Part of NYMF.  It's the show we did last year.  You can look up the website and check out what some of the music sounds like. [Name redacted] is the composer and librettist.  You would be perfect.  The subject is very dark and the music is very demanding and the story is beautiful and moving.  I may be back, depending on whether they can adapt to my out-of-town schedule.  I'll send the composer a message that you will be there if you are going...”

I immediately thanked her and said that I would, indeed, be at the EPA. In my reply, I attached my headshot and resume so that she could pass it along when making the recommendation. I was thrilled to be able to go into the EPA knowing that they had already heard about me from someone they know and love (Joan!)

A few days later I happened to notice that this musical created a fan page on Facebook, so I became a fan. They posted a status about upcoming EPAs, so I left a comment telling them how excited I was to come in, and wishing them luck through the production process.

Today I received a call from the show’s casting director asking me to come in to the invited call for the musical. Yippee!! Not only am I excited that I get to come in with prepared materials from the show (always a bonus to the skip the EPA round and go right to the invite!) but I am also getting to add a new casting director to my roster of folks who know my work. This casting director has done tons of projects for well respected theaters who specialize in new musicals, so getting to know him is a huge asset for me.

Who knows what exactly made the phone ring with the appointment (Joan’s email, my becoming a fan on Facebook) but it most certainly would NOT have happened without Joan’s thoughtful recommendation. So, thank you, Joan! I try to make recommendations like this all the time for my friends in the industry, and I hope you will all consider doing the same. Recommendation karma is great!
