A wonderfully fun show

I had forgotten how much fun it was to discover good, live theater.

I was invited to see a show by the artistic director of the Judith Shakespeare Company. What an innovative company she leads! Not only do they keep classical theater alive, but they are committed to providing bigger and more plentiful roles to women, and are known for gender bending productions.

This one was no exception, and if you have a spare $19 (free for AEA members) I highly recommend going to see this show: The Rape of the Lock. It was a hilarious play within a play, and this device makes the classical verse very accessible. The play is being shown at the Duo Theater- a gorgeous space in the East Village, and runs without an intermission (so you have plenty of time to take advantage of the downtown night life.) I liked the show so much that I placed some votes for it at the New York Innovative Theater Awards.

Here is some information about them from the show program (the show closes soon- September 28.)

“The Rape of the Lock marks the first full production of RESURGENCE, JSC’s unique play development program which seeks to find, develop and produce new plays written in heightened language and verse, and which feature significant roles for women... In 2000 JSC sponsored two panels, ‘Expanding the Presence of Women in Shakespeare Performance’ and ‘Expanding the Presence of Women Directors,’ both featuring prominent women theater artists in conversation about women’s current status and possibilities in the business and the art form... The company trains young actors through its unique Apprenticeship Training Program, and has received multi-year funding from the New York State Council on the Arts and a prestigious Annenberg/NYCPAE grant to implement Shakespeare residencies in the New York City public schools.”

Look at me- this sounds like a review. And it is, kind of. Please do support this company - it will be well worth the effort!
