An interesting aspect of those kinds of tests (and personality tests such as Myers-Briggs [sp?]) is that most people feel that their results are exactly what they would have hoped for.
ReplyDeleteI took the test and Hedonism was way down the list (I'm mostly Existential), which is where I want it to be, but anyone who knows how much I prefer lentils and brown rice cooked simply but well, will understand that I am in fact ruled by my pleasures, it's just what I find pleasurable is not everyone's cup of tea.
And now I'm off to have a cup of coffee while reading a borrowed edition of Harry Potter's latest. Obviously not searching for meaning, trying to please God, working to my betterment, nor seeking to establish the rule of law in oppressed lands. But I pretend I'm something other than a Hedonist. Don't tell me the truth, I'd rather not know.
Your life is guided by the concept of Existentialism: You choose the meaning and purpose of your life.
ReplyDelete“Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does.”
“It is up to you to give [life] a meaning.”
--Jean-Paul Sartre
“It is man's natural sickness to believe that he possesses the Truth.”
--Blaise Pascal

Hrm... I've never thought of myself as Existential.
I find a problem with most of the online quizzes like this; 1) the questions are a little too blatant as to what philosophy the answer would correspond to, so that we can pick out what it is that we want to be (as uberbaud pointed out), even if it is on a subconscious level. What you actually are is probably a whole other ball game 2) its unscientific (and who knows who published them). I'm not a sociologist or psychologist, but I'd take it with a grain of salt. Just my 2 cents.
ReplyDeletep.s. According to the quiz, I am an Existential Hedonist. Personally though, I think that scriptures (of most religions) contain wisdom torward understanding our purpose, but I don't fully understand it and refuse to ascribe to all of it blindly or prescribe it to others indescriminantly.
The existentialist part of my readout may be because I don't believe in a one size fits all philosophy. There's got to be some wiggle room.
I feel similarly when uberbaud says "I pretend I'm something other than a Hedonist". I think we have a little bit of that in all of us.
